Here is a quick blurb of this amazing Science Fiction novel:

After a great war, the East Pacific is in ruins. In brutal Neo Seoul, where status comes from success in combat, ex-gang member Lee Jaewon is a talented pilot rising in the ranks of the academy. Abandoned as a kid in the slums of Old Seoul by his rebel father, Jaewon desires only to escape his past and prove himself a loyal soldier of the Neo State.

When Jaewon is recruited into the most lucrative weapons development division in Neo Seoul, he is eager to claim his best shot at military glory. But the mission becomes more complicated when he meets Tera, a test subject in the government’s supersoldier project. Tera was trained for one purpose: to pilot one of the lethal God Machines, massive robots for a never-ending war.

With secret orders to report on Tera, Jaewon becomes Tera’s partner, earning her reluctant respect. But as respect turns to love, Jaewon begins to question his loyalty to an oppressive regime that creates weapons out of humans. As the project prepares to go public amidst rumors of a rebellion, Jaewon must decide where he stands—as a soldier of the Neo State, or a rebel of the people.

Pacific Rim meets Korean action dramas in this mind-blowing, New Visions Award-winning science fiction debut.

We had some amazing opportunities to see Axie talk about her book including on a panel at Leviosa Con in 2016. Plus her FIRST book signing at this year’s Annual ALA Conference!

Here are a few reasons we loved REBEL SEOUL!

Five pages in, I was hooked by the concept and the world building. Fifteen pages in, I was somehow already very invested in every character. Thirty pages in, I was screaming! In the best way! – Mara

You’ve never read a book like this before. Axie’s characters will win your heart, her world is wholly original and enthralling, and her writing is gorgeous. Plus, you can pitch it as Pacific Rim meets K-Drama — so go! Buy it! And then send Axie all-caps tweets to match the all-caps texts I sent her while I was reading it! – Christine

The complex and intricate relationships all stood out to me. I loved how each character interacted with each other. Jaewon’s struggle with figuring out what he stood for and how to cope with what he saw as his father and best-friend’s past betrayals broke my heart. And it shaped who he was as he interacted with the strong and closed off Tera, the sweet and broken Ama, and (my favorite) the cocky and impulsive Alex. These characters swept me into a world of complicated emotions and decisions. – Kat

I came here for giant robot battles, kissing and k-pop. I did NOT sign up for getting emotionally demolished by this heart-wrenching book. 10/10 would get demolished by this book again. – Katy

REBEL SEOUL so delivers on everything promised. Badass robots. Cool futuristic tech. Covert military projects. It really is Pacific Rim x K-Drama. But this book is truly incredible because of its heart: the characters, crafted by their beautiful, brutal world. Every character is so complex and complicated, and every relationship so nuanced and heartfelt and REAL. I have no idea how Axie does it but I swear I *felt* for every single one of them, even the ones who were only there for a few scenes. – Akshaya
